WESS | Curatorial Collective Initiative
WESS(웨스)는 한국을 기반으로 활동하는 큐레이터들이 함께하는 큐레토리얼 이니셔티브입니다. 2019년 9월, 송고은·장혜정 공동 조직자를 비롯해 9명의 큐레이터가 합류하면서 총 11명의 공동 운영자로 시작했습니다.
WESS는 우리가 속한 미술 생태계의 현실과 조건에 대한 비판적 시각을 견지하며, 유연하고 느슨한 연대로 서로를 지지하는 형식적 실험과 질문을 거듭해 왔습니다. 유·무형의 경계를 자유롭게 오가며 시의성 있는 실천과 고민을 나누는 한 방식으로, 2019년부터 2023년까지 공간을 운영하며 구성원 각자의 독자적인 기획 프로젝트를 선보였습니다. 2026년에는 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 충신동에 WESS+를 열었습니다. WESS+는 공동 운영자들의 활동을 넘어 다양한 창작자와 협업자에게 열려 있는 공간으로, 창작자의 지속 가능한 활동 구조와 이를 위해 우리가 할 수 있는 일을 계속해서 모색하고자 합니다.
또한 2020년부터 진행해 온 연례 프로그램 《WESS 전시후도록》을 통해, 지원금 의존도가 높아 배포나 비평의 사각지대에 놓이기 쉬운 국내 미술 출판물을 매개로 전시와 프로젝트를 조명하고 담론 형성을 도모해 왔습니다. 나아가 국내외 기관 및 개인과 교류하고 협력하며, 2022년 《Frieze Film Seoul: I Am My Own Other》 GYOPO 공동 기획, 2023년 인도네시아 살리하라 아트센터 《Natural Born Odd》, 2025년 베트남 헤리티지 아트 스페이스 공동 기획 《The Others’ Histories》 등의 프로젝트를 진행해 왔습니다. 이러한 활동을 바탕으로 각자의 관심사와 태도를 발견하고 교환하는 시도를 이어가고 있습니다.

WESS is a project and temporary space co-operated by Seoul-based curators, organized to provide a physical space befitting each curator’s activities, as well as a site through which to explore the possibility of autonomous and sustainable curatorial practices.
The exhibition/project by each curator takes place continuously in a single space, attempting to build a joint operating platform where each curator is able to discover his or her interests and outlooks. Launched in October 2019, WESS was co-organized by Hyejung Jang and Goeun Song, and joined by co-curators Junghyun Kim, Sungwoo Kim, Sunok Kim, Hyukgue Kwon, Jeeyoung Maeng, Suzy Park, Jihyun Shin, Sunghui Lee and Heeseung Choi.

WESS+는
- 전시 생산의 빠른 순환에 몰두하기보다 창작, 연구, 비평의 발생을 위한 시간을 확보하려는 시도입니다.
- 전시 전의 리서치와 전시 후의 기록까지 창작의 일부로 여기며, 전시가 끝나는 지점에서 질문을 시작합니다.
- 운영 구조와 대관 현황을 공개하고 나와 동료가 활동을 지속할 수 있는 환경에 대해 고민합니다.
- 예술 작품의 소유나 진열을 넘어, 예술이 지속될 수 있는 조건과 협업의 방법론을 함께 모색하는 공간입니다.
WESS+ 소개
WESS+는 2026년 9월, 오늘날의 미술 환경과 그 안에서 반복되는 구조적 한계에 질문을 던지며 출발합니다.
오늘날 펼쳐지는 예술 프로젝트는 대부분 공공 지원금에 의존하고 있습니다. 그러나 넉넉지 않은 여건 속에서 치솟는 임대료와 대관료는 창작과 연구에 쓰여야 할 자원을 빠르게 소진시킵니다. 이로 인해 전시 기간은 점차 짧아지고, 프로젝트 단위의 노동은 불안정해져 창작자와 협업자, 그리고 관람자 모두가 충분한 시간과 관계를 허락하지 못하고 있습니다. 우리는 과연 이것을 ‘동시대성’이라는 이름으로 그저 받아들여야만 할까요?
WESS+는 최소 2년의 운영을 목표로 하는 임시적·실험적 공간으로, 지금의 조건 속에서 가능한 대안적 운영 방식과 협업 모델을 탐색하고자 합니다. 공간 확보에 드는 비용 부담을 낮춤으로써 창작자에게는 연구와 공유의 시간을, 관람자에게는 깊이 있는 감상과 비평의 시간을 확보하려는 시도입니다. 공간을 공동의 자원으로 나누며, 전시 전후의 연구와 대화가 지속되는 또 다른 길을 함께 모색하길 제안합니다.
WESS+ APPROACH
- Create time for artistic production, research, and criticism, rather than focusing on the fast-paced cycle of exhibition production.
- Consider research before an exhibition and documentation after it as part of the creative process, and to begin asking questions where an exhibition ends.
- Make its operating structure and space-use information transparent, while considering how artists and peers can continue their practices.
- Look beyond the ownership or display of artworks to explore the conditions that support ongoing artistic practice and different ways of working together.
ABOUT WESS+
Opening in September 2026, WESS+ builds on WESS’s previous experience of running a physical space while questioning the conditions of the current Korean art scene and the structural limitations that continue to shape it.
In the Korean art scene today, most art projects rely heavily on public funding. At the same time, rising rents and venue fees consume resources that could otherwise go toward artistic production and research. Exhibition periods have become shorter, project-based work more precarious, and artists, collaborators, and audiences have less time to engage with the work and with one another. Is this something we should simply accept in the name of “contemporaneity”?
WESS+ is a temporary, experimental space aiming to stay open for at least two years. It explores alternative ways of operating and collaborating within the current conditions of the art world. By lowering the cost of securing exhibition space, WESS+ aims to give artists more time for research and sharing, and audiences more time to engage with exhibitions and exchange ideas. We make the space available as a shared resource and invite artists, curators, and audiences to explore ways for research and conversation to continue before and after an exhibition.
